Katie Leung Bashes Mary Kate Olsen for being Anorexic

Starring : the "stars" in this post aren't "A-List" for top bill.

In an interview with GL Magazine-Uk, Katie Leung who plays Harry Potter’s love interest, Cho Chang, said that she thought American celebrities tend to give bad examples to young girls.

The 18 year old was asked what she thought of young celebrity girls being so thin today:

“I Don’t really look up to American celebrities, most of them give a bad example to young girls. Like Mary Kate Olsen, I’ve heard she’s anorexic. You see pictures of her looking like a skeleton, I mean, a lot of young girls look up to her and there she is giving a bad example. You also see her walking around drinking and smoking. I respect her personal decisions but for me personally, that’s just another bad example.”

Errr.. since when was having a disease setting a bad example?

There’s a difference between looking anorexic and having anorexia. She might be commenting on the former.

  2. Miss Cinnamon Says:

She said she heard MK was anorexic. That would therefore explain photos of MK looking like a skeleton. So she’s bashing anorexics. If she meant the former, she should have said she didn’t like the skeleton look. She shouldn’t have brought up anorexia at all. It’s offensive to everyone suffering from the disease.

  3. Savannah Says:

Miss cinamon, if they didn’t want to be anorexic than they wouldn’t have to be. Its not like someone is starving them!!!!! They’ve got plenty of money!!!!!!!!!! The only way to become anorexic is to starve yourself and there is no way that they have such a busy schedule that they just decide not to provide there bodies with nutrients!!!!! thats not hard to see! And I’m reffering to all the anorexic stars out there!! no offense to you miss cinamon!!!

  4. Miss Cinnamon Says:

Anorexia is a psychological disease. That’s why those suffering from it go see psychiatrists. They don’t CHOOSE to be anorexic. It’s a MENTAL DISEASE. Look it up. On Wikipedia it says: “Anorexia nervosa is thought to be a complex condition, involving psychological, neurobiological, physiological and sociological components.” PSYCHOLOGICAL due from a number of different factors. I have a friend who is anorexic and she didn’t MAKE herself anorexic by choice. A number of factors attributed to her having the disease.

Please don’t go around blaming anorexics for what they can’t help. It’s like depression – they can’t help it.

  5. Jenners Says:

I wasn’t going to chime in again here, but I’ve thought about it over the weekend and here I go. I’m on the soapbox, so please excuse me for a moment.

These posts in particular really tick me off. You’re codling and pandering saying that anorexia is a disease, it’s not their fault, we should feel bad for them, etc. And I’m not saying we shouldn’t. Anorexia is a terrible disease. But the overwhelming prejudice, bias, and general hypocriticism makes me sick. So many posts on this site are “She’s fat.” “She needs to lose that baby weight because she’s huge.” “She lost weight and looked great but she’s gained so much back and she looks terrible.” Jesus!

It’s terrible to be overly thin, but it’s not her fault. We should all rally around her and support her. But you fatties!? No f*ing way! You’re fat because you eat too much, don’t work out, don’t care about your figure, etc. What about people who have diseases that make their weight an issue? What about people with Graves disease, thyroid problems, or genetic morbid obesity? Nope, no sympathy for you girls.

This is the horrifying double standard we’re teaching the young women of this world. It’s okay to be super thin, we can help you. But if you’re overweight, you’re on your own because you did this to yourself. I’m not pointing the finger at Ms. C. I’m pointing it to anyone who shoots for the lowest common denominator: fat and/or ugly. There are so many better ways to express yourselves that just a catty, flippant insult. “That dress is really not flattering for her figure.” “You know, I just don’t like her style. I just don’t like the way she dresses.” I understand it’s amusing to poke fun at fashion. But do it to the fashion, not the model.

I think we all need to be a little kinder to ourselves and the women we’re trying to raise in a society that only holds pounds as important. Society won’t change if we allow this kind of behavior to continue.

  6. Miss Cinnamon Says:

I’m going to be blunt. This is a website in which I do in my spare time. This isn’t my day job so I don’t take it too seriously. If I got paid a proper wage to do this full time, then maybe I’ll double think things before I post them but really, my job is to get hits for this site and unfortunately, people wanna read about who’s gaining weight, who’s deathly skinny, and who looks like utter crap. So that’s what I’m going to deliver.

In the same way tabloids grossly invade the privacy of celebrities in order to capture pictures, despite the possible consequences (read: Princess Diana), for magazine sales, I will continue to do what I’m doing. I don’t care about being a hypocrite on this site because it’s just not that important enough to me.

  7. Jenners Says:

If you got paid more you would be more respectful and professional? That is such a bourgeois attitude. I understand that bad news sells better than good, but that’s also the reason why I don’t read tabloids. I also understand that this isn’t a professional news agency; it’s a blog for fashion. But what tabloids do isn’t right, and you’re just perpetuating bad behavior. The attitude of, “I’m getting paid so who cares?” is a very poor one to have, especially when you’re alienating the readers you need to sustain the site. While I know that no one else has said anything directly, I have spoken face-to-face with some of your readers, and they find this behavior deplorable.

  8. LadyT. Says:

Good for you, Jenners! You are right on! Thanks for expressing what I’m sure a lot of readers are feeling.
I guess, Miss Cinnamon, if this site is “just not that important” to you, you won’t be too surprised when your exiting readers feel the same.

  9. Miss Cinnamon Says:

Again, not bothered. I know the hit counts and I know the engine searches that get readers to this site. Two people complaining isn’t going to affect me. Actually, 500 people complaining isn’t going to affect me either. Mainly because this isn’t my site. I’m not the editor. I do what the editor tells me to do so you’ll have to take it up with her.

And this isn’t just a blog for fashion. It’s a blog for fashion and celebrity gossip. If you don’t like the posts, then don’t read this blog. It’s really as simple as that. As for professional, this is a professional blog, as we do generate revenue.

If you want to fight this cause, then why don’t you take on bigger sites which have about 100x more readers than we do? Perezhilton and ONTD constantly make fun of celebrities and their appearances, especially weight. But I guess you’re starting out with smaller sites, or you just don’t read them becase they’re tabloids. Well then, just don’t read this site either. I just couldn’t care less.

What I do care about is the clogging up of the comment section unnecessarily. So if this website affects you so much you can’t just stop reading it, email the editor. She’ll be back from her holiday soon and I’m sure she’ll get back to you as soon as she can.

  10. Jenners Says:

The reason I don’t complain to other sites is because the only reason I come to this site is Heidi GoLightly.

  11. Miss Cinnamon Says:

Unfortunately I’m here to stay as for some reason, my posts tend to bring in the higher hit counts as evidenced by the search words.

  12. LadyT. Says:

So much for the “baby steps” approach to changing negative or hurtful perceptions. Yes, I suppose a girl could “take on” the bigger sites, but I’m here (for the moment), so I might as well start with you.
Your ridiculous “if you don’t like it, go elsewhere” attitude reflects your obvious youth. I guess if people don’t want to hear about genocide or war, they should just not watch the news, right? Child porn? Don’t bother trying to stop it; just don’t look it at! I can picture you as a confidant to Rosa Parks: “Gee Rosa, if you don’t like sitting in the back of the bus, why don’t you just walk?”
    Baby steps, Miss Cinnamon.
Good luck to you in your day job and life. I truly hope, for your sake, they’re not as filled with negativity as your posts. What a shame that would be.

  13. Miss Cinnamon Says:

It’s just matter of opinion. You think my attitude is a reflection of my youth and I think your inability to understand when I say go take this up with the editor because it’s the only way to change this site and stop clogging up the comments section, is a reflection of your lack of intelligence.

Have you never heard of the expression, ‘Choose your battles,’ ? Just because I choose not to join in on your little tirade against the portrayal of women in the media, it doesn’t mean that I am ‘ridiculous’ as you say. Racism? I’ll fight against that. The Iraq War? I have strong opinions against that. But the portrayal of women in the media? Sorry. Not my battle to fight. And it doesn’t mean I’m apathetic or “ridiculous” or immature, as you implied.

It baffles me though why you keep insisting on posting here. Do you really think you will change the way I post by posting here everyday and making personal attacks – and yes, making allusions to my day job and life is personal. And it’s one thing I know my editor would disapprove of and that’s personal attacks clogging up her site. So please take my advice of several comments ago and email the editor before I’m forced to temporarily suspend your account.

    Thanks.

[...] For the record, her post on Mary Kate’s anorexia was not a bad thing. The commenters got fired up, though, which is fine. If you disliked the post, re-read it. Miss Cinnamon was right in stating that having the disease of anorexia is not the actress’s fault. I’m sure it was just a very heavy straw for some, and I’m sorry. [...]

  15. zip Says:

Anyone who says that anorexia (or any other mental illness) is a choice, or that anorexics should just eat…is completely uneducated on the subject. So don’t waste everyone else’s time and keep your mouth shut.

  16. skit Says:

she’s definitely not a bad example, after all she’s done together with her sister…she didn’t want to look anorexic, she was just sick. she also had other problems. but now it seems she came back stronger. and that’s alright ;)

  17. gracie Says:

i’ve read all the comments about the article, and i agree with Miss Cinnamon, anorexia is not a self imposed choice to starve ones self, it is a disease, a psychological disease which stems from feelings such as low self esteem, poor self image and mild/semi depression…there are many other reosons contributing but to say that an anorexic “if they didn’t want to be anorexic than they wouldn’t have to be. ” is simply the most ridicolous thing i have ever read. And then when miss Cinnamon explains, she is personally attacked, i think calling her immature was simply ignorant because she is clearly educated because she is writing an article, and can also argue the correct definition of anorexia.

  18. Andrea Says:

    Hellers Peeps!!

Okay No Offense but bashing on MK, beacuse she was anorexic was just sick!! what the heck is that girl’s problem!! like Ms. Cinnamon Said, its a Mental Disease thats why they go see shrinks!! speaking on Mk Behalf.. have you ever tought of the pressures of being and example hellers!! they need a life as well would it be stressing to have people look at you 24/7 365 days a week!! hello its pressure!! and it can get to anybody!!.. For example Anahi for RBD, she had it and overcame it now shes a great example for girls with that diase or this girl Kat, on you tube she had it and made a couple of videos on it these girls want to help others and prevent more from falling into this illness so the most we should do is support them.. personally MK and Ashley lead better lives than most of hollywood hello Paris Hilton?? ring any bells Lindsay Lohan Tara Reid ect… these girls have grown up on tv, its normal for the pressure to get to them Mk just dealt with it in a diffrent way not to say it was right but it was the way to say she was in trouble i mean she got treatment dint she?? and little mis Kate Leung can justt eat a piee.. seriously!!!! she had no right to say that, and shes not even a freaking star all she is is CHO Chang on harry potter or at least thats what ive seen from her soo she honestly has no rights bashing MK!! Mk is a talented girl!! and deserves support!!!

  19. Andrea Says:

O Right and As to Emma Watson she aint a better example at least ash and MK are in there 20 almostt!! Emma Watson drinks and shes onlyy 15!!!! shes a baby!!! soo that can shut her mouth up!

  20. Emma Says:

um i think Katie is wright i mean cummon MK is the one thats doing this to her self and i am a young teenager and i think its pethetic that celebraties set bad examples on the teens that look up to them, i used to like mk alot and used to follow her style but now i think shes gone to far, shes just killing her self , there are fan sites and young teens are asking how to make themselves anorexic and i think thats discracefull because other young people will be killing themselves aswell!!

  21. emma Says:

But i do think katie was way out of order bashing mk in public so on the other hand she hasnt shown a good impression she just taught peeps that bullyings right coz that wats shes shown her self to be a bully and thats even worse!!

  22. Aya Says:

Ok, I know Mary Kate was having a disease and she can’t help it, but all Katie did was telling us her opinion. I think she has the right to do that, don’t you? Katie is right that Mary Kate and other stars are examples for a lot of young girls out there and looking very thin isn’t a good example. Most of the stars choose for a skeleton look.

  23. Dewan Says:

If asked why I love her I would say
It’s the sway in her hips,
    the thickness in her thighs.
It’s the lust in her lips,
    the love in her eyes.
It’s the softness of her skin,
    the silk in her hair.
    It’s the twist in her walk;
it’s the sweetness in her talk.
It’s the way she loves me
that makes me love her each day.
That is what I would say.

  24. SpaceRat Says:

Anorexia is a self-inflicted mental illness. You people are such idiots.

  25. HP Gurl Says:

HEY… Don’t put Emma Watson in this. She has nothing to do in this. And come on MK is making her self that way okay so don’t start bashing out Katie either becuase she bashed out that twin okay!!!!

  26. HP Gurl Says:

And I agree with SpaceRat. You damn idiots. And at least Katie has some meet on her bones un like MK!

  27. HP Gurl Says:

And at least Katie got to KISS Daniel Radcliffe (U know Harry Potter).

  28. Cho Says:

Yeah, I love MK and still do but the disease has to get started somehow and MK chose to start.
She has to use the same power she used to get into it to get out if it.
Besides, katie leung rocks, ermm…i mean she’s right.
MK is setting a bad example.
A lot of celebs I adore and love are, and that bothers me.
but katie’s opinion, in my opinion, is correct, in my opinion, which is my opinion of her opinion of MK’s opinion, and…
    -bambles on-

  29. asian Says:

God, that’s the most embarrasing thing I’ve ever read, how the heck can she say something so stupid. As said, deeply embarrased. Kinda ashamed to be an asian while reading this, then again, DAMN PROUD, though not of her.. HEHE.. du.hh..
    smell yah all later.

  30. Haldir Says:

Aye, I agree with Cho. Not that I like MK at all, but I agree that it isn’t her fault… and it IS at the same time. Okay, look… nobody is BORN with anorexia. It can be helped and it doesn’t just come to people without warning… obviously MK tried to diet, had trouble with it, started taking drugs… and look where that has taken her. You don’t just become anorexic… it doesn’t just grow inside of anyone.

So while I agree that it isn’t too much of MK’s fault that her dieting went haywire, I definitely agree with Katie that disgustingly thin celebrities do set a bad example to young teens. It leads TEENS to become anorexic, it drives them mad, and it leads them to starve themselves in vain.

And Katie definitely has her rights to say what she likes about MK, because a lot of people would agree with her… she obviously didn’t mean to single MK out, but she did it… and it was silly. But, is MK not a good example of what Katie was talking about? Ladies and gents, do look… Katie stated that it was her own personal opinion and that she respects MK’s own decisions for herself. Is that not apologetic enough?

See here, I know it sounds like I am siding with Katie, but there isn’t much to take MK’s side for… Katie was doing the talking. I just think that Katie was wrong for saying that out in public for everyone to hear (or in this case… read) and MK is wrong for trying to diet in the first place… (she had a really good figure before… I would have done anything for my own to be like that).

Though… Katie’s wee personal statement is NOTHING compared to what the press write about MK nowadays.

  31. Sanada Genichiro/Sumonada Gayichiro Says:

fuwahahaha… these comments rly entertained me. Sanada rocks! ha soo random fuwaa

  32. Jazz Says:

I think that Katie’s concerns are perfectly valid – with fame comes responsiblility, and if you are not ready for that responsibility, you should not be a celebrity. Mary Kate is a role model to many young girls, who look up to her and admire her. She should always take care of her appearance, and it is very true – there is an “anorexic” epidemic going on right now where models and celebrities feel that they need to be overly skinny, and thus, the public who watch them feel that same need too. It is all about role models. I know it seems unfair to put so much pressure on celebrities, but that is the truth of it – millions of eyes are on them constantly, and every decision they make will affect a fan’s life.

  33. ThaiAmericanGirl Says:

    YOU GUYS KATIE IS RIGHT!!!!!!
    MK sucks anyways.
and well, i think katie rocks.
SHE HAS A RIGHT TO SAY WHATEVER SHE LIKES
Katie is right and she is just saying her opinion.
She even says she doesnt mind what MK does she just thinks its a bad example.
Anyways, MK can do whatever she whats it doesn’t matter.

  34. Haldir Says:

Well I agree with you, ThaiAmericanGirl… completely. I really don’t like MK either… and aye, Katie is super.

Freedom of choice, speech, thought, decisions and whatnot, everyone; leave both girls alone.

  35. ohmyfreakinggod Says:

woww, you guys are dumb as hell. katie= thumbs up. mk= thubs down. booohooo, cry my a damn river.

  36. Haldir Says:
